Photobiomodulation and sport: performance and recovery with Taopatch®
There is a question that sports professionals have always asked: how to help the body perform at its best, and then recover faster? Drugs, supplements, monitoring technologies — every era has its answers. The one that comes from photobiomodulation today is among the most studied and, in many respects, among the most concrete because it works directly on the energy of the cells.
What is photobiomodulation and why does it affect sport ?
Photobiomodulation is the use of specific light wavelengths to stimulate cellular biological processes. In sports, the field of action is wide: from muscle response under stress to the quality of recovery, from neuromuscular control to metabolic efficiency.
The basic principle concerns mitochondria, the cellular structures responsible for the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) — the fundamental energy molecule for every muscle contraction, every nerve signal, every regenerative process. When stimulated by appropriate wavelengths, mitochondria increase their efficiency, with effects that propagate throughout the neuromuscular system.
The scientific literature on photobiomodulation now has over 200,000 publications. It is considered one of the most documented therapies in the world, and classified as free of side effects if applied with the correct parameters.
Taopatch® and sport: continuous and wearable photobiomodulation
Taopatch® is a nanotechnological medical device that brings photobiomodulation into everyday life on a continuous basis. It is the size of a coin, is applied to the skin via a patch and is activated thanks to natural light and body heat. Inside, Quantum Dot nanocrystals — technology awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2023 — convert the energy received into a wide spectrum of therapeutic wavelengths, emitted constantly.
For the athlete, this continuity opens up new possibilities: the device can be worn during training, in recovery and in the following hours, keeping cell stimulation active without interruption. An approach that integrates naturally with professional light therapy tools, extending the benefits beyond the session.
Taopatch® is also certified anti-doping by the University of Milan, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
What scientific studies say about Taopatch® and performance
The applications of Taopatch® in sports and neuromuscular physiology are the subject of published research and academic studies conducted in collaboration with several Italian universities. Here are the main documented strands.
High-intensity metabolic and neuromuscular responses
A pilot randomized clinical trial — "Metabolic and neuromuscular responses to high-intensity training with and without Taopatch® nanotechnology," published in the Central European Journal of Sport Sciences and Medicine — analyzed how the body responds to high-intensity workouts with and without the device. The results highlight changes in neuromuscular and metabolic parameters, including indicators of exercise response such as lactate and inflammatory biomarkers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), suggesting a possible effect on performance and exercise adaptation processes.
Biomarkers of recovery: less inflammation, more strength
The research "From lab to track: the Taopatch® biomarker and performance detection technologies" (University of Palermo, San Raffaele di Roma, University of Catania) monitored 10 cross-training athletes for 8 weeks, analyzing biomarkers of muscle damage and inflammation — including CK, LDH and IL-6. The group using Taopatch® showed a significant improvement in lower limb strength and a reduction in IL-6 and CK (p<0.05), indicating a concrete effect on accelerating recovery and adapting to training.
Balance, posture and athletic stability
The study "Performance, balance and posture variations with Occlusal Splint and Taopatch® devices" (published in Minerva Medica / The Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness) analyzed how the use of Taopatch® affects postural stability and balance — fundamental parameters for any sports discipline, from the precision of the technical gesture to injury prevention. A further study in the same journal — "Effects of nanotechnologies-based devices on postural control in healthy subjects" — confirmed significant changes in postural control compared to the placebo group.
From research to the field: Taopatch® applications by discipline
From the elite to the youth sector, from the track to the stage: the research on Taopatch® has crossed different disciplines, finding a fertile field each time. Here is what emerges from the theses and masters conducted in Italian universities.
- Cycling — Two independent researches (University of Ferrara and Enna Kore) have explored how Taopatch® acts on neuromuscular rebalancing and on the biomechanics of gesture, with positive results on performance in a group of 16 cyclists.
- Tennis — The acute effects on neuromuscular modulation in young tennis players were documented in a poster presented at the EMMS 2026 congress: a sign that interest is also extending to young people.
- Martial arts — A thesis from the University of Milan has measured the influence of Taopatch® on athletic performance, opening a line of research on disciplines that require precision, balance and fine motor control.
- Competitive dance — A randomized double-blind study (La Sapienza University of Rome) found significant changes to postural balance in competitive dancers: a demanding context, where every variation is measurable.
- 5-a-side football — The research has integrated nanotechnology into the monitoring of the physical development of young futsal players within the FIGC parameters, suggesting concrete applications in the youth sector and in preventive sports medicine.
Taopatch® as a tool for the sports professional
For sports physicians, physiotherapists and athletic trainers, what makes this approach interesting is the possibility of integrating continuous — not episodic — stimulation into the athlete's journey. The safety profile is consolidated, anti-doping certification is verified, and the published literature covers a range of applications ranging from muscle recovery to improved motor control, to posture and neuroplasticity.
